Both the building and landscape at École secondaire Michel-Gratton are designed to create a healthy learning environment. The project incorporates innovative HVAC and electrical systems achieving 60% designed energy savings, environmentally friendly building products with high recycled and local content, native landscape plantings, and permeable surfaces where possible to reduce storm water runoff.
The L-shaped building was oriented at 45 degrees to the street in order to increase privacy to the neighbouring homes. This orientation also provides the desired north/south exposure to natural light in the classrooms. The building is stepped down from two- to one-storey to help mediate its mass.
